Track and Field
The Town of Brookline sponsors all eight elementary schools to participate in two town-wide athletic opportunities: cross country in the fall and track and field in the spring. Practices and the meet are free of charge.
The P.E. staff collaborates to train and prepare students to compete in a track and field meet against other Brookline elementary schools. Students compete by grade level and by gender. For example, 7th grade girls compete against other 7th grade girls across the district. The one exception is the 4x100m relay.
Dates: Mid-April to mid-May
Expectations: Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible. Students may participate in all practices, but must attend at least two practices to be eligible to compete.
Practices: P.E. staff hold practices before and after school in the weeks leading up to the meet. Practices focus on building cardiovascular endurance, strength, and overall performance.
Team Selection: Students are placed into events based on effort, behavior, and performance during practices. There are three spots available per event, so not all students may be selected. Students may compete in up to three events, typically one track, one field, and a relay. A list of participants will be posted one week prior to the meet.
Permission Slips: Students selected for the meet will receive a permission slip to be completed by a parent/guardian and returned to the P.E. staff.
